Also known as imitation crab, Surimi is a Japanese term for a paste made from fish meat. It is commonly used as a base ingredient in many processed seafood products like imitation crab meat, fish balls, and fish cakes.

Surimi is made by deboning and mincing fish fillets, then washing the minced fish to remove any unwanted tastes or smells. The resulting paste is then mixed with additives such as starch, egg whites, and flavourings to improve its texture and taste.

Surimi is known for its versatility and ability to mimic the texture and appearance of more expensive seafood products, making it a popular choice for creating affordable seafood dishes.

Does crab and cheese go together?

Crab and cheese can indeed go together quite well in various dishes. But, not every cheese type will make the list. Given the buttery texture of crab artificial or true), cheeses with similar creamy aspects and subtle flavours are the most complimentary.

The combination of savoury crab meat with rich and creamy mac and cheese can create a delicious and satisfying flavour profile.

Popular dishes that feature this pairing include crab and cheese stuffed mushrooms, crab and cheese dip, crab and cheese quesadillas, and crab and cheese stuffed pasta shells. The cheese helps to enhance the overall richness of the dish while complementing the delicate sweetness of the crab meat.

What cheeses pair well with crab and pasta?

Crustacean meat like lobster, crab and shrimp are best paired with smooth-textured cheeses like camembert and brie. However, these can be pricey choices. Pepperjack and cheddar are far more cost-effective. Yet, equally delicious.

In pasta dishes specifically, parmesan cheese, known for its rich, nutty flavour, complements the subtle sweetness of crab meat beautifully. Another great option is Pecorino Romano, a sharp and salty cheese that can add dynamic flavour notes to your dish.

Additionally, Gruyère cheese offers a creamy texture and a slightly nutty taste that can enhance the overall flavour profile of your crab mac and cheese. Feel free to experiment with these cheeses to find the perfect combination that suits your taste buds!
